Emergency Procedures
Coaches
Please review the following procedures, which you should follow in the event of an emergency (e.g injury, seizure) involving your athlete. Do not be alarmed by these procedures. They are intended to prepare you for the unlikely but possible.
In General
- Read and re-read your Athlete's Profile.
- Make mental note of any medical concerns or cautionary information on the Profile. The Profile will alert you to the possibility of injury or seizure.
- Before the session begins, ask the KEEN Coordinator and/or the athlete's parents to answer any questions you have about your athlete.
- Please keep the Profile with you at all times. At the end of each session, you will update the form and return it to the KEEN Coordinator.
- In the event of an emergency, be calm.
Be Aware That
- The KEEN Coordinator has a First Aid kit with him/her at all times.
- A public telephone is on Tilden Middle School’s premises and located near the gym.
- Once you have gone through the KEEN Training Session you are covered by a liability insurance policy. Similarly, the parents of our athletes have signed a liability release for their children to participate. In short, don't worry. Just follow these procedures.
Injury Procedures
If your athlete incurs an injury:
- If the injury is minor (e.g. scraped knee, stubbed finger, etc.), please take your athlete to the KEEN Coordinator for First Aid treatment.
- If the injury is more serious:
- Immediately call for assistance from the nearest coach;
- Have that coach:
- Make sure another coach has assumed responsibility for his/her athlete;
- Immediately inform the KEEN Coordinator; and
- Find the injured athlete's parents if they are present. Regardless of the severity of the injury, tell the athlete’s parents about the incident.
- Do not move your athlete unless it is necessary to prevent further injury.
- Take out your athlete's Profile and have it available for the KEEN Coordinator. Be able to tell him/her what caused the injury and whether any information on the Profile is relevant to the injury or potential treatment.
- The KEEN Coordinator will assess the situation. He/she may ask you to:
- Help keep other athletes away from your athlete;
- Obtain a copy of the Emergency Information Form that KEEN maintains on each athlete;
- Call the athlete's parent(s) if not present at the session;
- Call the emergency telephone contact/number on the Profile;
- Call the Rescue Squad -- Dial "911"
- Be calm. You have done nothing wrong and you are not alone.
Seizure Procedures
As you know, some of our athletes have seizure disorders or other conditions which make them prone to seizures. Many take medications to control seizures. Your athlete's Profile will indicate the possibility of a seizure. Be sure to read this information and have the Profile with you at all times.
In the event a seizure occurs:
- Immediately call for assistance from the nearest coach;
- Have that coach:
- Make sure another coach has assumed responsibility for his/her athlete;
- Immediately inform the KEEN Coordinator; and
- Find your athlete's parents if they are present.
- Note the EXACT time the seizure began -- this is very important!
- Do not put anything in or near the athlete's mouth. Give the athlete room to breathe. If available, you can put a t-shirt or sweatshirt under the athlete's head if he or she is on a rough surface.
- Take out your athlete's Profile and have it available for the KEEN Coordinator. Be able to tell the KEEN Coordinator exactly how long the seizure has lasted and what the Profile says about your athlete's seizures.
- The KEEN Coordinator will assess the situation. He/she may ask you to:
- Help keep other athletes away from your athlete;
- Obtain a copy of the Emergency Information Form that KEEN maintains on each athlete;
- Call the athlete's parent(s) if not present at the session;
- Call the emergency telephone contact/number on the Profile;
- Call the Rescue Squad -- Dial "911".
- Be calm. You have done nothing wrong and you are not alone.
"Disappearing" Athlete Procedures
In all of the years KEEN has been in existence, we have yet to lose an Athlete. Lets keep it that way!
You should be aware that a few of our athletes may try to run, often very quickly, away from you and towards the exit doors. Many times they are simply trying to check to see if their parents are still around. You must stay with them at all times. This is especially important when we move our activities outside. Some of our athletes are unaware of the dangers of traffic, sharp objects, fire, strangers, etc. Be alert and stay with your athlete at all times!
If your athlete runs away and hides from you for only a brief period of time, please inform the KEEN Coordinator. The athlete must be told, in very stern terms, that this is unacceptable behavior.
When your athlete is in the bathroom, please wait outside the door. Similarly, at the end of a sport session stay with your athlete until his or her parents arrive to take him home. The athletes are our responsibility until safely in the hands of their parents.
If you somehow lose track of your athlete:
- Inform the KEEN Coordinator immediately.
- Be able to provide a description of what the athlete was wearing to help in spotting the athlete.
- The KEEN Coordinator will initiate a search and enlist the assistance of other coaches to find your athlete.

This information is designed to alert you to what we call the unlikely but possible. Please re-read it before each KEEN session to refresh your memory as to the procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.
